My Go-To for ERDs, Even With Existing SQL!

I was looking to clean up some older database schemas last week and, as usual, DrawSQL was my first stop. I've used them before for new projects, but this time I needed to import existing SQL to create an ERD. It worked perfectly, and being able to then share that with my team for reviews directly in the platform saved us a ton of time compared to trying to do it in Lucidchart or dbdiagram.io. The interactive editor is super intuitive, and it's why I keep coming back.

Good ERD editor

Used the interactive ERD editor. It worked well. Diagramming was straightforward. Exported the SQL fine. Quick and easy tool.

Reliable diagramming

I've been using DrawSQL for a while now, probably my third or fourth time buying a subscription. This time I needed to use the SQL import tool and generate some DDL export. Just like previous orders, it was consistent and reliable. No glitches, everything worked as expected. It's why I keep coming back for my database modeling. Never had an issue with them, which is nice.

Easy to use

I needed to get some database diagrams done for a client. Used the free tier first to see how it was, and it was pretty good. Upgraded for the private diagrams and team workspaces. It was super easy to import my SQL and the drag-and-drop editor made changes really simple. Sharing with the team went smoothly too. Definitely helped me out.

Annual plan savings

I was looking for a good database design tool and found DrawSQL. Saw the annual billing discount, which saved me 20% compared to monthly. That made the Pro plan much more affordable. The database visualization features are exactly what I needed for my project. Felt like a solid purchase.

I'm working on an open-source project. Any chance of getting a discount or free access?

They actually have a program for open source projects. You usually have to apply for it, though.

Yeah, I heard about that. It's not a coupon code, more like an application process to get special access.

Does DrawSQL handle importing existing SQL? My current project has a huge database already.

K Kate 1 month ago
Absolutely. That's one of its main selling points. Just dump your SQL and it'll generate the diagram.

For sure. I've done it with pretty complex schemas and it worked great.

How does DrawSQL compare to Lucidchart for database stuff? I've used Lucidchart a bit but it feels clunky for ERDs.

I Ivy R. 2 months ago
DrawSQL is way more focused on databases, so it feels a lot smoother for ERDs. Lucidchart is more general purpose.

Night and day difference. DrawSQL is built specifically for this, so the features are much better for database design. Lucidchart just kinda *has* ERD tools.

Anyone know if they have a student discount? Trying to save some cash.

I got one! You usually have to apply through a specific link, not just a random code.

Yep, they do. I think it's part of their education program or something. Worth looking into.

Can you actually export the diagrams to like, Laravel migrations? That would save me so much time.

Oh yeah, totally. It's one of the best features, imo. Saves a ton of manual work.
